Not Too Bad - Funny!
Sgt. Bilko (1996) is pure Steve Martin mischief—military-style. It's based on the classic 1950s TV series The Phil Silvers Show, and Martin steps into the role of Master Sergeant Ernest G. Bilko, a fast-talking, scheme-running, totally shameless hustler running a motor pool unit at a U.S. Army base.
But this ain’t your typical military flick. Bilko’s less about discipline and more about dodging it—he’s got scams going, card games running, and soldiers more focused on horse betting than target practice. He's charming, sly, and absolutely allergic to real work.
Everything’s running like a well-oiled con until... let’s just say someone from his past shows up with a score to settle, and things start going sideways.
It’s lighthearted, cartoonish fun—more about antics and personality than plot. Martin nails the role with that cheeky grin and slick patter, surrounded by a goofy cast of misfits that make the whole thing feel like MASH* on Red Bull.
If you're in the mood for something playful, harmless, and just plain silly, this one delivers. Not his deepest film—but definitely one of his easiest to just enjoy.
7/10
