It’s Complicated (2009)

Pretty Good Romantic Comedy

It’s Complicated (2009) is a grown-up romantic comedy with a sly smile and a glass of wine in hand. It stars Meryl Streep and Alec Baldwin as a divorced couple who suddenly, unexpectedly, find themselves tangled up in each other’s lives again—just when they thought everything had finally settled down.

Steve Martin plays it more subdued here—still charming, still funny, but with a quiet sweetness that balances out Baldwin’s big energy. He’s the nice guy, the one who listens, the one who doesn’t blow in like a hurricane. And honestly? He shines in that calmer, more grounded role.

The film is elegant, a little spicy, and full of those “oh no, we’re too old for this nonsense—but here we are anyway” moments. It’s about second chances, old habits, personal growth (or lack thereof), and figuring out what you really want after life has already reshuffled the deck.

It’s also got beautiful homes, great food, sharp writing, and a lot of very relatable emotional mess. Think of it as a classy, middle-aged rom-com with just enough bite to keep it interesting.

Not your typical Steve Martin flick—but if you're in the mood for something a bit softer and wiser, it's a solid watch.

7/10
