Son of Dracula (1943)

Great Lon Chaney Jr Gem

This a really good horror gem. It's refreshing to see Lon Chaney, Jr in a horror film outside of his role as Larry Talbot (The Wolf Man). And yes Chaney does a fine job as Count Alucard, really, Dracula.

I found the first part of the film good... some say it's slow but it's not all that bad. It's a little slow but sometimes that is good. Better than having every film that you watch fast from beginning to the end. And in all honesty the beginning isn't all that slow - some are just impatient to see Lon Chaney (or Dracula) on the screen - I can understand that. :D

This movie is better than it's given credit for. I realize that some only feel that Bela Lugosi can play Dracula... and he is the best (along with Christopher Lee) but Lon Chaney, Jr. really pours his all into the role of Dracula. Mysterious, vicious and alluring.. just what you would expect from the character.

The story of Son of Dracula is entertaining. Count Alucard is Dracula backwards to keep his identity a bit of a mystery to most everyone. He goes to Louisiana for a bride, Louise Allbritton, but she has other plans for the Count. What are her plans? You'll have to watch to find out.

8/10
