The Terror (1938)

Pretty Good

The story begins with a daring gold robbery planned by a shadowy criminal mastermind known only as “The Terror.” After the heist, members of the gang are betrayed and sent to prison while the mysterious leader disappears with the loot. Years later, the surviving crooks get out and begin hunting for the man who double-crossed them.

That search leads them into a gloomy old country house full of strange characters, nervous servants, suspicious behavior, hidden motives, and a growing sense that danger is creeping around every corridor. The police are also closing in, trying to uncover the true identity of “The Terror” before more violence erupts.

It’s less a straight horror film and more a foggy Edgar Wallace-style mystery thriller — the kind with secret passages, tense conversations, sudden twists, and eccentric supporting characters. And since it’s British from that era, there’s a wonderful layer of dry humor tucked underneath the suspense.

7/10
