Good Cinema
Tarzan and His Mate (1934) is the sumptuous follow-up to the original, a dazzling blend of jungle adventure, romance, and early Hollywood glamour. This one steps up the stakes—not just in the peril department but in the chemistry and sophistication of the characters.
Weissmuller and Maureen O’Sullivan return as the iconic couple, bringing a more confident, mature vibe to their roles. The film is renowned for its lush cinematography—jungle vistas, cascading waterfalls, and exotic set pieces that practically ooze atmosphere.
This sequel leans harder into the romantic angle, exploring the wild, free-spirited relationship between Tarzan and Jane, while still serving up plenty of action, suspense, and animal encounters. It’s got that classic MGM polish with a bit more daring than the first film—thanks in part to the pre-Code era’s looser restrictions.
If you loved the raw energy of Tarzan the Ape Man, this one smooths out the edges and adds some real style, all while keeping the heart of the jungle alive.
9/10
